10k Runs

I continued to live in Greenville, South Carolina, and then in Anderson until October 1985. From July until I left South Carolina, the events near where I lived were 10K runs. An AI overview identifies a 10K run as a 6.2-mile foot race that challenges runners with a distance exactly halfway between a 5K and a half-marathon. Competition was in my nature, but not being able to finish in the top ten, my focus was to finish with a 6:30 per mile/4:02 per kilometer pace. I came close, but was never able to achieve the pace I desired. Looking back, had I trained properly, I would have been successful.

I still had the mountain bike, but MTB trails had not yet begun to develop where I lived, so I primarily rode my Bianchi road bike. Having graduated from Furman and moving to Anderson, I no longer had the luxury of walking a couple of hundred yards to the Physical Activities Center and swimming laps at the indoor pool.
